I hate how we’re taught “don’t get raped” when it should be “don’t rape”.
Nothing disgusts me more
There are so many problems with this post.
First it implies that the only type of rape is male on female rape. This is not only wrong, but incredibly insulting to other victims of rape. I’ll use the statistics of Australia as that’s where I’m from. The Beureau of statistics says that 15% of females have reported sexual assault since the age of 15, and 4% of males have reported sexual assault since the age of 15. Although there is a smaller percentage, it doesn’t make the rape of males any less important. Remember this is also only reported cases. With the huge social pressure against the possibility of men being raped (by females), including the original post, it is likely that this statistic is very under represented of the truth. Note it is also likely that the female statistic of sexual assault is also lower.
According to the CDC 1 in 71 men have been raped or the target of rape by another male. It is also widely believed that many cases of male on male rape are not reported due to the social pressure.
Females can also rape males, in fact again the CDC found that 1 in 21 men have been forced into sex (oral or penetration). There is an even greater chance that this statistic is wrong due to two huge myths. 1. that men always want sex so a women doesn’t have to force them self and 2. a man can only get an erection when aroused. These myths stigmatize massively males who have been raped by females.
Lastly the case of female-female rape has very little research or statistics conducted on it. However it would be wrong to assume that this has never happened.
By saying that sons should be taught not to rape and daughters shouldn’t be taught how not to be raped, is not only sexist but hugely offensive to the women and men who have been raped who do not fall into this category.
Furthermore woman shouldn’t be taught how to defend themselves? There is only one part of this that I agree with and that it shouldn’t be exclusively women who are taught how to defend themselves. Females are lucky that they get taught this skill, while as far as I’m aware no school offers such training to men. As I mentioned before men can get raped, so why are only females taught how to protect themselves. From the girls I’ve spoken to they’ve attended camps, lectures, classes etc. on how to be safe out at night, how to spot a drugged drink, how to protect yourself when attacked, what to do in an attack. Not one guy who I have spoken to has ever been taught this. Why? because its a myth guys can’t get raped, which is clearly wrong. Everyone should receive training because everyone is at risk of it.
Lastly why the heck should people not be taught how to not be raped? That’s such a stupid idea, yes we should enforce moral values that rape is bad, and I would say this is done quite a lot in some societies, which is a good thing. But to believe that we shouldn’t teach people how to defend themselves? That’s just downright stupid. That would be like saying why should we train police to catch criminals, we should teach people not to be criminals. No matter how strict and widespread the teaching is, there will be those who try and rape others. Its a sad but unfortunate truth. We shouldn’t make people less able to protect them self, yes we should teach more about how rape is bad. But its ludicrous to believe that will put an end to rape. If you don’t believe me look at murder statistics, they aren’t 0 because we teach people murder is wrong.
